I Swear I Shot These After I Mowed the Lawn, Josh

May 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

Where are the migrants? I must sleep too late for the warblers, because surely they’re out there, but I’m just not seeing them. And I’ve had the hummingbird feeder up for a few weeks now, ever since people started reported them on the Carolinas Birding List, but no luck. David at Leave Me Alone, I’m [...]

Cardinal as Chicken Double

March 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Second in a mercifully brief series of birds in disguise is this female northern cardinal making like a chicken. It appears she’s laid a clutch of sunflower seeds to make the act that much more convincing.

Hooray, a Photo Gallery!

January 29th, 2008 · Comments Off

I’ve started a photo gallery of birds from the past year or so, organized by type of bird. It’ll take a while before I get everything organized, but it’ll be fun to watch it grow. In each gallery, click on the thumbnails to see the full-size photos.
As much as I hate to mention this, please [...]

Cardinals, Maples, Blogger Ready for Spring

January 21st, 2008 · Comments Off

It’s been darn cold these past several days. Frankly, I’m tired of January. Every year I’m tired of January, which comes from growing up in the icy north, where cold means 60 below zero. Storm’s Coming, Birds Feasting

January 16th, 2008 · Comments Off

The Piedmont is under a winter storm warning tonight. We might see our first snow of the season, but more likely we’ll just get some icy roads that’ll keep us housebound for a few hours at the end of our little road. The birds are loading up at all the feeders. This morning has been [...]

Juncos in the trunk(os)

October 29th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Dark-eyed juncos are arriving. The low-30s temps last night pushed more our way, along with a ton of white-throated sparrows. I spent the afternoon recovering from a few weeks of intense workload by stuffing a bunch of perennials and pyracanthas in the ground and snapping relatively close-up shots of juncos, using the new foliage as [...]

Cant a bird get a little privacy?

October 29th, 2007 · Comments Off

After a few rainy days, the birds are back in force at the bath. This female cardinal splashed out nearly all the water during her vigorous ablutions. But it’s very true that for birds, the sight and sound of splashing water is like candy to a bird blogger. This poor girl just couldn’t get any [...]

More Monarchs (and Towhees)

October 11th, 2007 · Comments Off

Just when I thought monarch migration was over, yesterday I watched three of them waft their way westward over the yard. They were gliding low and slow, probably because the nights are getting chilly and these guys are sluggish when cool. Despite the drought (see the Stats for the last rain date), the coneflowers are [...]
