Juncos did not succeed in eating all of the clover seed. As you can see, they were kind enough to leave quite a few. Josh mowed it yesterday for the first time since we started the clover lawn experiment. At the beginning of last November, the front yard was a new-construction and drought disaster of [...]

Junco as Kim Jung-il’s Hair Double
March 4th, 2008 · 7 Comments
I see this dark-eyed junco every day. Something’s going on with its hairdo. It just hit me that the bird looks a lot like bepouffed North Korean leader Kim Jung-il.
Glad I got that out of my system. I’m now imposing an indefinite moratorium on junco posts.

Can This Be an Oregon Junco? *CONFIRMED*
February 21st, 2008 · 3 Comments
UPDATE 2/26: Just got an email from David Bonter at Cornell, who confirms that this is indeed an Oregon race dark-eyed junco! They will add my sighting to their list of confirmed rare birds on the Project FeederWatch site. The Oregon juncos reported there so far are only as far east as Ohio, so this [...]

Junco Pic Makes the GBBC Gallery!

This is the second year I’ve submitted photos to the Great Backyard Bird Count photo gallery. Last year, none of my shots were chosen, which I admit was a bummer for a competitive nut like me. This year, however, my slouching dark-eyed junco made the cut! See it here in all it’s glory! Woohoo!

I like when birds are all slouchy like this dark-eyed junco. It’s good to know they have the occasional moment to relax and not worry about hawks and cats and stuff eating them.

The Bittersweet Junco

Feels like spring, but it’s really still winter. (Just in case, like me, you’ve been feeling cocky about putting away your sweaters and flinging open the windows.) The yard and feeders are still awash with dark-eyed juncos grazing for seeds in the relative warmth of the south. This is a funny time of year, what [...]

Signs of Spring: Goldfinches Devouring Maple Blossoms
February 8th, 2008 · Comments Off
Red maples bloom early in the season. Here in the Piedmont, they bloom right about the time our American goldfinch males start molting into their brighter breeding plumage. The blooms weren’t out yesterday, but they sure are today, and the ones outside my office are filled with bloom-snacking finches. Goldfinches LOVE maple blossoms!
I sat on [...]

More Juncos on the Feeder
January 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments
More “wintry mix” on the way today. The dark-eyed juncos are really discovering the wonders of the feeder. It’s a weird thing to see these ground-feeders figuring out the feeder world. Juncos don’t really get the etiquette up there, so they either give way to other birds too readily, or they get into combat when [...]
