As of yesterday, the female Canada Goose was still incubating her eggs. Her mate was somehow injured a couple of weeks ago and didn’t look like he was going to make it, so she’s been fending for herself. Normally the male will sit on the eggs while the female forages for food. It’s unclear if [...]

Nesting Canada Goose
April 11th, 2007 · Comments Off
You know it’s spring when the local Canada geese are sitting on their nests. This one has set up residence right outside one of the buildings by the big pond. If you see her, give her some space. Besides, her mate is always nearby and will use his own methods to help you steer clear [...]

Doubled-crested cormorant evaluates others
April 4th, 2007 · 1 Comment
This double-crested cormorant has totally put dibs on that corner of the swim platform. It’s been sitting in that same spot it seems for weeks now, beak in the air all snooty-like, feet gripping the edges, watching the Canada geese fly back and forth. A male Eastern Bluebird guarded this nestbox by the fishing pond. And worked on being adorable.
This [...]

Bird at the Pond: Canada Goose
December 23rd, 2006 · Comments Off
If you’ve strolled around the ponds at all, or even just walked to the fitness center or pool, you’ve surely encountered the most familiar and widespread goose in North America: the Canada Goose. Although North Carolina is technically in the CG’s winter breeding territory, many have become nonmigratory, preferring to settle in comfy, food-laden urban [...]
