Where’s the checkbox for deer on Project FeederWatch?

November 18th, 2007 · Comments Off

This is what greeted me from outside my office window early this morning: the female white-tail deer and her two young charges that use our yard and (soon-to-be-our) woods as a thoroughfare. Our friend Ben gave us a persimmon-flavored deer lick as a housewarming gift, which is affixed to a pine at the property perimeter. [...]

Josh has Nuthatch Fever

October 3rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Josh, aka HarmoniousJosh, is an artist of tiny proportions. That is, most of his work is 2.5×3.5 inches. He sells it on eBay and recently in a group art show in downtown Greensboro. I’m sure you aren’t surprised that he has done several little portraits of birds that have visited our feeders. This week he’s [...]

Nuthatches speak Chickadee; plus, Chickadees aren’t always fair

March 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment

This story is making the bird rounds. Apparently nuthatches understand the various alarm calls of chickadees. But what I find more interesting is the bit at the end. There are folks who believe the chickadee is a fair player, perhaps because of its tendency to hang out in mixed company. Not always, according to Cornell’s [...]

Bird List: 5 reasons to love the Nuthatch

October 27th, 2006 · Comments Off

Lack of a neck make them even cuter.
Long, pointy beak makes them look smart and pretentious.
They mutter like quiet geese.
Huge feet in proportion to their bodies—always cute.
They look like 1930s film stars with slicked-back Copacabana-ready hairdos and tuxes.

At My Birdfeeder: White-breasted Nuthatch

September 21st, 2006 · Comments Off

Lo and behold! A new bird today, which means another blurry bird pic for you! This dude moves fast, and I took a lot of no-bird pics just to get these. The White-Breasted Nuthatch is proof that we live near trees. They’re usually spotted creeping down tree trunks, often head-first, looking for bugs and seeds.
Nuthatches [...]
