Reader Pic: Donna’s Rose-breasted Grosbeak

May 15th, 2008 · Comments Off

Donna from Timberlake, NC, got a fantastic up-close look at a migrating male rose-breasted grosbeak on May 9. Well, technically her husband got this shot, but they’ve both seen RBGs at their place this spring. (Read Donna’s account of this sighting.) Grosbeak sightings don’t get much better than this, do they? Also, fantastic lawn, Donna!

They winter in southern Mexico, Central American, northern South America, and the Caribbean. Summer finds them in the higher elevations of the [...]

Stephanie might be right—which would be awesome because I could finally put purple finch on my life list. Opinions are welcome, either in the comments or [...]

Bird Redux: Rose-breasted Grosbeak

May 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off

Remember this fellow from last fall? This young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak dropped into my feeder while I was reading the Sunday paper a few feet away. Never saw another one—until today, that is:

Here he is, all grown up. Okay, I know the chances are beyond slim that this is the same bird, but this is [...]

At my birdfeeder: Rose-breasted Grosbeak

October 1st, 2006 · Comments Off

Sitting on the patio this morning with the Sunday paper, and who drops into the birdfeeder? This Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, that’s who! This male, whose plumage indicates that he’s either young or wearing his duller winter colors, didn’t really care that I was 4 feet away, he just dug into the sunflower seeds. See his big [...]
