Blissed-out Crow

April 9th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Ah, warm sunshine, a pan of seeds … life can be so good. That’s what this American crow seems to be thinking as it stands all blissed-out and glassy-eyed after stuffing itself silly with sunflower hearts.

Give a crow a bone

December 6th, 2007 · Comments Off

Yep, just another idyllic scene outside my office window. What, you don’t think a crow clutching a femur in its claw is idyllic? Well, then you must not have been a goth in your ’80s youth. This is pure goth gold. Can’t you hear Bauhaus playing softly in the background?

Bones must be hot stuff to [...]

Scenes from Saturday

November 24th, 2007 · 1 Comment

We had a reasonably hard frost this morning, and the birds were out in force. The crow trio showed up like clockwork to pick at the corncobs on the hill. I don’t think they’re even that into the corn per se; I think they just really enjoy the process of picking off the kernels.
I nearly [...]

What happens when you get a bigger lens?

April 5th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I’ve been extolling the virtues of the Canon S2 IS camera, with its awesome powers of 12x optical/4x digital zoom. Well, birders can’t get enough zoom, so yesterday I received the Raynox DCR-2020Pro 2.2x telephoto lens, giving me an awesome amount of reach. Here are a few practice shots, taken at distances I wouldn’t have [...]

Arctic blast brings hot birds

February 6th, 2007 · Comments Off

Walked around the complex this morning, and there was a LOT of birding action! We’re in the midst of a polar blast, with temps hovering in the high 20s/low 30s. The sun is nice and bright, though, so it could be worse. Here’s a handful of the many birds I spotted.
This Song Sparrow was singing [...]

Yellow-rumped Warblers and Crows love Carl Edwards

January 13th, 2007 · Comments Off

Okay, this may be a stretch, since obviously there’s no office supply store in Lincoln Green, but how outstanding was it to see what I think is a Pine Siskin Yellow-rumped Warbler in a tree outside Office Depot on Battleground today? I mean, come on, HJ and I go on a random errand and end [...]
