We Won Cookies!

Josh and Lunch learn about sharing
I won a box of insanely delicious chocolate chip cookies from Suzanne of DearReader.com, my new favorite book club website. They arrived in time for Thanksgiving, and Josh, Lunch, and Rita really enjoyed them. (So did I—when I could wrestle them away from the cookie fiends.)
I seem to be on a long-form reading kick, which is rare considering how much reading I do all day for work. I read all of Jane Austen over the summer. I’m hooked on PaperbackSwap.com and now the daily e-mail excerpts from Dear Reader. We’ve been watching the entire Inspector Morse series from Netflix as well, so I’ve got a pile of Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse paperbacks waiting for me to jump into once I finish a Carl Hiassen novel. After that, Henry Mitchell’s Essential Earthman
collection of essays is calling my name.
A Kindle would be awesome if they weren’t so expensive; it would help me in my mission to contain the number of physical books to a single shelving unit, plus I just love gadgets and have no problem reading onscreen.
What are you reading these days?

I saw your blog title on Mary’s View. Glad I found it. I’ll look forward to reviewing your archives and following the blog.

Have you ever seen the People Reading blog (http://www.peoplereading.blogspot.com/)? Though I don’t keep up with it as often as I’d like, I adore it when I do. I think you’d dig it.
After having recently gorged at the annual library book sale (which is, like, better than the best holiday–$4 hardcovers, $1 paperback), I’m at the moment reading and skimming several at once. An interesting book called Playing God in Yellowstone: The Destruction of America’s First National Park; Of Wolves and Men by Barry Lopez; and Insects Through the Seasons, Gilbert Waldbauer. Most recent fiction I’ve read was Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. I finished two-thirds of it then finally had to return it after renewing oodles of times. I really liked it, but then it took a turn I didn’t like. I’m a fickle reader.

Lunch doesn’t seem to be getting his fair share. Funny picture.
My reading? I am catching up on all the Pulitzer Prize winners and runners-up. Richard Powers “The Echo Makers” was quite interesting, and involved BIRDS! (Sandhill Cranes). Also reading Christopher Buckley’s politcal satire novels. An easy read.
Is Audible.com not in vogue anymore? I haven’t listened to many books lately, but as my eyes get “worser and worser”, I may be back there!

The Essential Earthman is on my list too. I frequently read “One Man’s Garden” for inspiration when I can’t think of anything to write about!

Wow, everyone’s reading–and good stuff, to boot. And the People Reading blog is really cool. It’s a good, not-snarky addition to my RSS feeds.
I think lots of people are still doing Audible, especially now that it’s part of iTunes. I’ve tried listening to books, and for a while worked in acquisitions for a books on tape (yes, tape!) pub. I tend to get distracted, though, or fall asleep.
I skipped the Dexter mysteries for now so I could start the Essential Earthman. So excellent. Mitchell is a good reality check that pretty much nothing ever goes as planned in the garden. I find his “assume the worst” attitude more motivating to keep at it than those perfect gardens on TV (I’m looking at you and your vast estate, P. Allen Smith).

I’m reading Bluebirds: The Evil Satanists Of The Avian World by Sam Peabody.
