Eight-day-old bluebird nestlings

All together now: Awwwwwww! Dave from Holly Springs, NC, sent in this shot of a trio of eight-day-old bluebird nestlings, taken on June 18. If this cool video on his blog is any indication, Dave is the Bluebird Whisperer, having coaxed them to take mealworms right from the palm of his hand! Josh likes to do the same thing with red-breasted nuthatches. Come to think of it, this is kind of a guy thing, it seems. Probably 95 percent of all videos I’ve seen where someone is feeding a bird by hand features a guy as the feeder. I won’t get into the psychology of that since I think it pretty much speaks for itself. Feel free to draw your own conclusions. (Of course, I’m probably just jealous!)

If you have a photo you’d like to share with the gang, feel free to send it to me at greensborobirds@gmail.com!

    Iris,

I think you are right. I’ve seen hummingbirds and Chickadees eat from a ladies’ hand here in the blogworld. But the best I saw was a bald man with a teaspoon of peanut butter on his head and three Carolina Chickadees! I loved it!

I didn’t know Bluebirds or Nuthatches were so brave! I need to check it out!

Straight from his bald head? That’s awesome! I might have to convince Josh to shave his head and give this a shot.

My wife would attribute it to men having enough time on their hands to train birds, while the women are accomplishing things. I know this because I broached the subject of feeding our chipmunks by hand, and she said that she could find me something to do if I had that kind of free time.
