Tiki Chicken Coop, Stage 2

The chickens first evening in the tiki coop

The chickens' first evening in the tiki coop

We finally finished the new chicken coop to the point where the chickens can live in it. Some tweaking remains to be done, like building a hutch and a roost, which will happen in the next couple of weeks since I’m suddenly swimming in work (yay!). For now, the chickens are loving all the space and happily tuck themselves into the crate every night. We opted for a tiki theme, which emerged with the idea of the bamboo roof. I originally planned to trim the tarp so you wouldn’t see it, but Josh advised keeping the side flaps for sun and rain protection, which, although not aesthetically gorgeous, turned out to be highly practical. They roll up neatly under the bamboo eaves when not in use, as you can see in the photo. There are some tiki torches in the shed that we’re gonna put in front of it, and I’m thinking of planting clumping bamboo and other hardy tropical-style plants around it.

All in all, while it’s far from perfectly executed, we did a pretty good job for rank amateurs, and we learned a lot about building things in the process. Next summer I think I’ll tackle constructing Christine’s hut in the woods that I keep promising her.

I’m inspired. I’ve been wanting a few chickens, but have felt overwhelmed in regards to building something, but I think I can build something similar to this! I’ve built things before.

Thanks for cheering me up with this picture and your cute future plans. I’ve had some tough news this week.

Hey Lynn, I just read the sad news on your blog. Hang in there. And get to planning your coop–there’s no time like the present, after all.
