Jess found this prebloom rattlesnake plantain in the Ohio woods

GBirds reader Jess mentioned finding what looked like rattlesnake plantain while walking in the woods in Ohio. After checking out the above photo that Jess e-mailed, I’ve gotta say that was a perfect ID. This one hasn’t fully bloomed yet, so you can see how the stalk gives the plant its name, as it resembles the tail of a rattlesnake. I missed seeing this stage by a few days, so I’m glad Jess sent this photo so we can see the “before” moment.

Thanks for posting my photo! It’s my first web posting ever — though I’m recently aspiring to create my own site … thus the new Mac. I adore your site and am so glad I found it. I’m a former NC resident and your pictures open a window into one of the homes of my heart.

Hoorah! I’m glad I had the honor of being your first Web post! I highly encourage starting a site of your own, although it would be irresponsible if I didn’t warn you of blogging’s highly addictive properties.

Thanks also for your compliments of my site. That makes my day!
