I promised a sphinx moth, and I’m a blogger of my word. I found this Nessus sphinx moth clutching onto the grass in the morning dew. Audubon’s Field Guide to the Southeastern States (very useful for local insects and plants) says that the Nessus sphinx “feeds on flowers, hovering like a hummingbird.” Sounds like another moth we know and love, doesn’t it? Actually, you can see that the body of this Nessus sphinx is shaped very much like that of the hummingbird moth. They are both in the sphinx moth family, although not all sphinx moths’ bodies are shaped like this. That yellowish band across its body practically glowed in the hazy morning light. This site has good pics of the Nessus sphinx from egg to adult.
