FOTY* Monarch

May 2nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

A monarch butterfly wafted its way up the hill and out of the yard this afternoon. Of course, it appeared shortly after I thought, Wonder when the monarchs will arrive? Not saying I’m the blogging Patricia Arquette or anything; it’s just weird how that happens. Anyone else seeing monarchs yet?

*FOTY = First of the year; one of many goofy acronyms used among us bird dorks.

I had two FOTYs today - a white-crowned sparrow and a white-throated sparrow. No butterflies up north here yet that I have seen.

Jan, I just realized today that the white-throated sparrows are suddenly gone. Thursday was the last day I saw any. Must be all up your way now.

No, not yet. Just a lot of swallowtails.

White throated sparrows left here this week. I heard one singing on Wednesday morning but not since. They were abundant here and I’ll miss them until next time….

Must be the regional variations …. in St Louis, it’s FOY. But I do not wish to mince letters.

My FOTY white-crowned sparrows showed up last week and now I’m seeing more than I’ve ever seen in past years. I had a brief glimpse of a white-throat this morning, but they are extremely rare these days. And had my first ever Tennessee Warbler over the past couple of days ….. actually first 12 *at least* ever. They are all over the trees and keep coming back!
