Lonesome Birds

The birds aren’t really lonesome, that’s just the name of our street. Here are a few shots I took of the birds in our yard tonight. The very first Lonesome bird shot:

A trio of Eastern Bluebirds was sitting on the wire in front of our neighbor’s house. They’re gonna have to get used to seeing me trotting out with my camera lens pointing into the sky.

The property next to us is wooded and brimming with birds. Brown Thrashers were going crazy for these dark blue berries (don’t know what they are—anyone?). One Thrasher was even perched nearly at the top of a pine; it was the highest up I’ve ever seen one of these forest-floor lurkers.

The Thrashers were practically jumping into my viewfinder. Seriously, at one point I was able to shoot three of these guys in one shot! (Evidence below, although one joker’s mooning us.) Birds are totally different outside of the city.

More photos from tonight’s shooting TK. I spotted the other usuals—Mockingbirds, Carolina and House Wrens, Blue Jays, Red-bellied Woodpecker (male), Gray Catbird, Downy Woodpecker, Turkey Vulture.
Also, I was lucky enough to spot a few Common Nighthawks on their way to Central America. It’s prime time for Nighthawk spotting on the East Coast. Check the sky from around 4:00 till dusk.

“one joker’s mooning us” I think that’s just his way of welcoming you to the neighborhood. He knows a bird-lover when he sees one!

Those berries are pokeweed–and the birds do love them! I had a family of bluebirds descend on mine the other day. Glad you’re enjoying the new place! Hey to Josh!

Pokeweed! Thanks, David! It’s funny, by this afternoon there was barely a single berry left.
