Midsummer birds: Red-bellies are back

Red-bellied Woodpecker at feeder

The local Red-bellied Woodpeckers must either be finished nesting or are in the midst of feeding hungry babies, because this male bird is back at my feeder after being absent for a good month. He’s dropping in every few minutes to fill up his beak—literally, he scoops up a bunch of seeds and nuts until his beak is stuffed. Then he flies off into a nearby tree.

After yesterday afternoon’s downpour I was jarred from my work by a squeaking male Downy Woodpecker at the feeder—another bird that has been MIA for a month or so. Summer can be a quiet time, birdwise, so the appearance of these birds at the feeder is a sign that fall migration isn’t too far on the horizon.
