Variations of the yellow jersey
July 15th, 2007 · 5 Comments

Many people know that for years I’ve arranged my life so I can watch the live broadcast of the Tour de France from beginning to end. Occasionally I’d be forced to miss a stage (meetings or other tedious work stuff), and would have to avoid the news-spewing television in the Conde Nast elevators for fear of learning the day’s winner before I could watch the evening repeat. How maddening to hear Anna Wintour mutter to Andre Leon Talley, “Well, I see Lance won again today.” Argh, devil indeed! I’m not the only one to get into Tour spirit. This male American Goldfinch popped in this morning, yellow blazing, in time to see the ascent of the first of today’s three Category 1 climbs. Allez! Allez!
The goldfinch wasn’t the only one in honorary yellow today:

Borat at the Tour de France motivating Team Astana. Strange bird indeed.

You’re so jealous of my glamorous life. And of that dude’s little frock.

Hey NN –
I’ve been seeing this extremely bright turquoise colored bird hanging around the feeders in my backyard from time to time. (That is when the male cardinals aren’t having an out and out war about who’s woman is who’s. Man, they’re scarier than the jays that used to dive bomb my dog!!)
Anyway – any clue what the turquoise bird might be?

Hey Jules,
I’m gonna guess it’s an Indigo Bunting. Check these posts for pictures. (Scroll to the bottom of the first one for a couple pics.) What kind of seed is it eating from your feeders? We’re moving to a little farm soon and there’s an Indigo Bunting out there that I’d love to lure in for good photo ops.
