Happy Fourth, birders. We live next to a Revolutionary War battlefield, which is where I do most of my birding. We also live in a town named for that battle’s general, Nathanael Greene, and we live in an apartment community also named for said general. So naturally today is a big day in our neighborhood, with muskets and cannons and reenactors exploding all day. Well, maybe not the reenactors, but they’re out there, too. Also, two of NC’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried in the park (which is why the rangers prefer that you don’t picnic or toss frisbees there).
Between stuffing your face with brats and beer, enjoy a little history lesson about the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Enjoy the irony that technically we lost this battle but, by losing, we ultimately won the war.
