Dragonfly in the park: Widow Skimmer
June 19th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Not a bird, but twice as many wings! This is a Widow Skimmer dragonfly, a female at that (males have a whitish wing spot next to the black bit), and a member of the King Skimmer group of dragonflies. She was perched obligingly in the central battlefield yesterday, allowing me to take photos of her impressive self from several angles. Dragonflies are a little eerie—you can see them following you around with their compound eyeballs, looking alternately amused and fierce, like they’re going to kick your ass for taking their picture.

Pshaw, it’s my mad skillz.
Actually, it’s the camera. I’m just along for the ride. And dragonflies are very patient.
