Josh shows off his birdspotting skills

June 15th, 2007 · 6 Comments

I handed the photo reins over to Josh this afternoon while we walked through Battleground Park. In a spot where we’ve had good luck seeing a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk, Josh noted that the birds sounded a little agitated. A second later, he pointed into the woods:

Barred Owl in Battleground Park

Another Barred Owl! We’ve seen them in this area before—in the trees next to the clearing on the far end of the park (closer to Lawndale). The sky is very gray and dim today, so this is a pretty good shot considering how dark it is in there.

We moved on to the central battlefied, where Happy and I lounged in the grass while Josh took these great shots of American Goldfinches. There were a bunch of them picking at the thistles and little chamomile-type flowers. Here’s a female:

And a great shot of a male:

I’ve been tormented for weeks by an unseen singing bird in the central area of the big meadow, and today finally saw my tormentor—a gorgeous Indigo Bunting at the very top of a small tree. Again, Josh got the winning shot:

Although I also like this somewhat fuzzy picture I took of it singing, beak wide open. I just love the open-beak shots!

It seems that “woot” or versions thereof are overused here, so I’ll just say “Yee Haw” GREAT shots.

If I want to learn that language, is it available on CD?

Josh will be teaching an evening seminar in l33t-speak at the Learning Annex. It’ll be right before the Tony Robbins appearance and immediately following Speed Dating for Seniors.

Ha ha. But yes, good point–I would hate to alienate my peers. How about “Pilates for Plumbers”?
