More baby Mute Swans!

May 8th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Our pair of Mute Swans at the larger pond finally hatched those eggs! This pair has six little cygnets, and they are of course just as cute as the other group. See for yourself:

On the smaller pond (aka Pond 2), where once we had five chicks we now have four. Something must have nabbed one in the past week or so. Birds have a tough row to hoe, which is why they have so many babies in each clutch. In any event, the remaining four are growing nicely. The swans on Pond 2 have a funny habit of hanging out beneath the fountain’s falling water, especially in the heat of the afternoon (see below). Sometimes the chicks will poke their heads beneath mom’s wings and just hang there while she paddles around in the faux rain.

The picture in the fountain should be published somewhere. Awesome! Mom enjoys the falling water as baby sits quietly outside the storm, patiently awaiting her return.

However you interpret it, the dynamics of the picture are beautiful.
