Swan hatchlings!

Mute Swan babies

Our local paper’s bird pics can’t even touch this much cuteness. I mean, come on, is this little Mute Swan baby not adorable? They hatched today by the small pond and are paddling about, eating whatever they can fit their beaks around. Don’t get too close, though, because the folks are tough when it comes to protecting the young cygnets.

Enough talk. On with the cute…

Nice pictures. So I take it you have at least on adult male and female there or did the male just fly in for the mating. Also, do the swanlings (?) stick around after they grow up? We have a male swan in our lake. It would be nice to see him start a family, but he seems too ornery for that.

We have two mated pairs (one pair per pond–they’re territorial) that live here year round. They were brought here together specifically to keep the goose population down. They have babies (cygnets) every year, and I believe the mgmt distributes them among their other properties once they’re old enough to move on. Don’t quote me on that, though.

All Mute Swans are ornery, mated or not. That’s what makes them so good at controlling those geese. Hm, you have a goose problem…

Those are soooo cute! I don’t get googly often, but that is some extreme cuteness!

    Veery,
It’s so funny you say that because I think that every single time I look at these little fellers. The cute factor around here this past week is so high that I think my teeth are going to fall out. Every time I go outside there’s some new adorable fuzzy thing. Too much!

Where are these birds located in Greensbor? We live in Guilford College are for several years before moving to Aiken, SC.

The little ones are so precious. What a thrill to see them.

Hi Joseph, Most of the birds on the site were seen in either Guilford Courthouse NMP or in the apartment community across the street (Lincoln Green). We’ll mosey up to Bur-Mil and Lake Brandt occasionally, and sometimes a friend or reader will send photos from the Greensboro area.
