At my feeder: Molting female cardinal with bug

March 24th, 2007 · No Comments

molting female cardinal with bugThe cardinals are pairing up and beginning to nest, which frequently coincides with molting. This female and its mate have been visiting the feeder for several days now. Look how heavily she’s molting! Every day it gets more intense and fluffy. Today both her and her mate dropped down onto the balcony, and the male presented her with this bug (he’s been feeding her seeds from the feeder as well—so cute). He flew off, and she sat in the feeder and ate her present.
