Dark-eyed Junco canoodles with sparrows
December 28th, 2006 · No Comments

Ran into a good-size group of Dark-eyed Juncos near 3200 this afternoon. This one sat long enough for my pokey self to take a pic. They were flocking with a few White-throated Sparrows. Juncos are actually a type of sparrow, and they’re common at feeders (not mine, though!). Greensboro is part of the Junco’s winter turf, so enjoy ‘em while you can before they fly back to Canada in spring. However, if you do get a Junco jones this summer, scout around the Appalachians, where there’s a small year-round population in the higher elevations.
