In the park today: Woodpeckers, Owl & Hawk
December 26th, 2006 · No Comments
The dog had ants in her pants today so we ended up in the muddy dog park. When the dog park is muddy, it’s pretty quiet, which really enhances the birdwatching experience. Something about that area really attracts woodpeckers of all kinds. Alas, I left the new camera at home—there were a lot of Red-bellied Woodpeckers picking at low (read: photographable) tree trunks, as well as a big female Pileated Woodpecker hanging out right over the fence, and several Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers calling back and forth. On the road back home, a big Barred Owl silently swooped across the street right behind a walking woman. (She had no idea.) Finally, at the very top of an oak in the entrance area was a young hawk (couldn’t see what kind). It teetered there for a few minutes, then soared across Old Battleground. Moral of this story: Gray days are good for birdwatching.
