Pileated Woodpecker hammers it home

Josh was getting a little irked at my awesome Pileated Woodpecker sightings, mainly because he hadn’t yet seen this mythical bird for himself. I was a little worried he was doubting my already tenuous grasp of reality, so we went to the park, Happy in tow, in search of this giant woodpecker. We got as far as the meadow when we heard one hammering loudly in the distance. Following our ears, it didn’t take long to spot a big male Pileated high atop a slim tree. (Side note: The trees in Greensboro are exceedingly tall!) We craned our necks waaay back and watched this magnificent, prehistoric-looking bird as he enjoyed his comfy nook in the sun. He treated us in return with the occasional whacking of the tree. Watch, wait, and listen for it with us…

No, you can’t really see the bird in this video, but sometimes birdwatching isn’t about actually seeing the bird.
